嘉宾简介:

Professor Paul Birch investigates how pathogens suppress or manipulate host defenses to cause disease. His team focuses on RXLR effector proteins from Phytophthora infestans, the pathogen responsible for potato late blight. He have discovered that haustoria serve as the primary entry sites for these effectors into plant cells. By elucidating the molecular mechanisms through which RXLR effectors target and subvert host components to facilitate infection, his research provides fundamental insights into pathogen virulence strategies and opens new avenues for developing crops with durable disease resistance.

He obtained his PhD from the University of Manchester, where he also conducted postdoctoral research. From 1995 to 2007, he served as a Principal Investigator at the Scottish Crop Research Institute, UK. Since 2007, he has been Professor and Chair of Plant Pathology in the School of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee. In 2016, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE). In 2017, he was awarded the Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award and received an ERC Advanced Grant. In 2025, he was awarded the British Society for Plant Pathology RKS Wood Prize.
